Past Indefinite Tense in Urdu is referred to as “ماضی معین” (Mazi Mueen) or سادہ ماضی” (Sada Mazi). It is a grammatical tense used to describe actions or events that have been completed in the past. The Past Indefinite tense indicates that the action occurred at a specific point in time in the past and is no longer ongoing.

In Urdu, the Past Indefinite tense is formed by using the past tense conjugation of the verb. The verb undergoes a change according to the gender and number of the subject in the sentence. It does not require any additional auxiliary verbs or particles.

For regular verbs, the past tense conjugation is formed by adding “ا” (a) at the end of the verb for masculine subjects, “ی” (i) for feminine subjects, and “ے” (e) for plural subjects.

For example:

  • میں نے کتاب پڑھی۔ (Main ne kitaab parhi.) – I read the book.
  • تم نے کچھ کیا؟ (Tum ne kuch kiya?) – Did you do something?
  • وہ لاہور گیا۔ (Woh Lahore gaya.) – He went to Lahore.

Regular Verbs:

  1. میں نے کتاب پڑھی۔ (Main ne kitaab parhi.) I read the book.

  2. تم نے کچھ کھایا؟ (Tum ne kuch khaya?) Did you eat something?

  3. وہ لاہور گیا۔ (Woh Lahore gaya.) He went to Lahore.

Irregular Verbs:

  1. میں نے تمہیں دیکھا۔ (Main ne tumhein dekha.) I saw you.

  2. وہ گزرتے لمحوں کو یاد کرتی ہے۔ (Woh guzarte lamhon ko yaad karti hai.) She remembers the passing moments.

  3. تم نے کیا کام کیا؟ (Tum ne kya kaam kiya?) What work did you do?

Usage:

  1. Describing actions in the past: Example: میں نے کتاب پڑھی۔ (Main ne kitaab parhi.) – I read the book.

  2. Narrating past events: Example: اس نے میری مدد کی۔ (Usne meri madad ki.) – He helped me.

  3. Stating past habits or routines: Example: میں روز سو بجے اٹھتا تھا۔ (Main roz so bajay uththa tha.) – I used to wake up at six o’clock every day.

  4. Expressing past intentions or plans: Example: میں نے سوچا تھا کہ تم آؤ گے۔ (Main ne socha tha ke tum aaoge.) – I thought you would come.

  5. Talking about past experiences: Example: میں نے بہت سفر کیے ہیں۔ (Main ne bohat safar kiye hain.) – I have traveled a lot.

  6. Reporting direct speech in the past: Example: اس نے کہا، “میں کل آؤں گا“۔ (Usne kaha, “Main kal aaunga.”) – He said, “I will come tomorrow.”

Past Indefinite Tense examples in Urdu

1. They appeared for the exam. وہ امتحان میں شریک ہوئے۔
2. He read various kinds of books. اس نے طرح طرح کی کتابیں پڑھیں۔
3. She slipped while walking. وہ چلتے چلتے پھسل گیا۔
4. He turned off the light before he went out. باہر جانے سے پہلے اس نے لائٹ آف کر دی۔
5. She proposed me last night. اس نے کل رات مجھے پرپوز کیا۔
6. He retired from his job. وہ اپنی ملازمت سے ریٹائر ہو گئے۔
7. I watched television in the evening. میں نے شام کو ٹیلی ویژن دیکھا۔
8. He went to the library yesterday. وہ کل لائبریری گیا۔
9. My grandfather walked two miles before breakfast. میرے دادا ناشتے سے دو میل پہلے چلے گئے۔
10. I woke up at 5 a.m. میں صبح 5 بجے اٹھا۔
11. They completed their work. انہوں نے اپنا کام مکمل کیا۔
12. I washed my clothes. میں نے اپنے کپڑے دھوئے۔
13. He checked it before he left the house. گھر سے نکلنے سے پہلے اس نے اسے چیک کیا۔
14. We went to see him yesterday. ہم کل اس سے ملنے گئے تھے۔
15. They missed their childhood. انہیں اپنا بچپن یاد آیا۔
16. I read my English book. میں نے اپنی انگریزی کتاب پڑھی۔
17. You used to shop in that market. آپ اسی بازار میں خریداری کرتے تھے۔
18. She got married last month. اس کی گزشتہ ماہ شادی ہوئی تھی۔
19. I attended my English class today. میں نے آج اپنی انگلش کلاس میں شرکت کی۔
20. He picked the apple and ate it. اس نے سیب اٹھایا اور کھا لیا۔

The Past Indefinite tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened and were completed in the past. It does not emphasize the duration or continuity of the action. It is often used to narrate stories, describe past experiences, or state facts about the past.
