Past Perfect Continuous Tense in Urdu

The past perfect continuous tense in Urdu is used to describe an ongoing action that started in the past and continued up until another point in the past. It expresses a duration of an action in the past. To form the past perfect continuous tense in Urdu, you need three components: the past tense form of the verb “ہونا” (hona), the past participle of the main verb, and the present participle of the helping verb “رہنا” (rehna).

Structure: Subject + “ہونا” (hona) in the past tense + Present Participle of “رہنا” (rehna) + Past Participle of the Verb

Example:

  • میں پڑھتا رہا تھا۔ (Main parhta raha tha.) – I had been reading.
  • تم کھانا کھاتے رہے تھے۔ (Tum khana khatay rahe thay.) – You had been eating.
  • وہ فلم دیکھ رہا تھا۔ (Woh film dekh raha tha.) – He/She had been watching a movie.

The verb “ہونا” (hona) is conjugated in the past tense form to agree with the gender and number of the subject. The helping verb “رہنا” (rehna) is used in its present participle form, and the main verb is used in its past participle form.

Additionally, time expressions can be added to indicate the specific duration or point in the past when the action was happening.

For example:

  • میں تین گھنٹے سے پڑھتا رہا تھا۔ (Main teen ghante se parhta raha tha.) – I had been reading for three hours.
  • وہ سفر سے تھک کر آیا تھا۔ (Woh safar se thak kar aaya tha.) – He had been tired after the journey.

Usage:

  1. Describing a continuous action in the past before another event: It is used to express an ongoing action that happened in the past before another specified event or time.

  • میں یہاں آنے سے پہلے تین گھنٹے سے کام کر رہا تھا۔ (Main yahan anay se pehle teen ghante se kaam kar raha tha.) – I had been working for three hours before coming here.
  • تم اندر آنے سے پہلے بارش میں بھیگ رہے تھے۔ (Tum andar anay se pehle barish mein bheeg rahe thay.) – You had been getting wet in the rain before coming inside.

2. He had been writing articles for three hours. وہ تین گھنٹے سے مضامین لکھ رہا تھا۔
3. She had been doing this since last four years. وہ پچھلے چار سال سے یہ کام کر رہی تھی۔
4. We had been playing video games for five hours. ہم پانچ گھنٹے سے ویڈیو گیمز کھیل رہے تھے۔
5. Rizwan had been bathing in the rain since morning. رضوان صبح سے بارش میں نہا رہا تھا۔
6. The program that was terminated had been working well since 1945. جو پروگرام ختم کیا گیا وہ 1945 سے اچھی طرح کام کر رہا تھا۔
7. They had been playing football before it started to rain. بارش شروع ہونے سے پہلے وہ فٹ بال کھیل رہے تھے۔
8. They had been shopping in that market before They came home. گھر آنے سے پہلے وہ اس بازار میں خریداری کر رہے تھے۔
9. She had been making noises for 10 minutes. وہ 10 منٹ سے شور مچا رہی تھی۔
10. You had been cheating on me since last 2 days. تم پچھلے دو دن سے مجھے دھوکہ دے رہے تھے۔
11. The farmer had been planting since morning. کسان صبح سے پودے لگا رہا تھا۔
12. The mechanic had been fixing my car since morning. مکینک صبح سے میری گاڑی ٹھیک کر رہا تھا۔
13. I had been learning English for four years. میں چار سال سے انگریزی سیکھ رہا تھا۔
14. They had been driving the car for 1 hour. وہ 1 گھنٹے سے کار چلا رہے تھے۔
15. Rafia had been making the clothes for months. ایزا مہینوں سے کپڑے بنا رہی تھی۔
16. They had been traveling around the world since the last month. وہ گزشتہ ماہ سے دنیا بھر کا سفر کر رہے تھے۔
